3 Reasons You Need to Take Care of Your Gutters

Mar 15th, 2021 // Gutter Repair and Replacement

It’s time to get your mind in the gutter. That’s right, dive right in and get to know the ins and outs of gutter care. Why? Because despite them being simple systems, if gutters are damaged, broken, or clogged, they can cause much more damage to the rest of your home, roof, and yard.

Follow these 5 quick and easy tips to take care of your gutters so they can take care of your home.

1: Clogs Can Happen Easily

Gutters are the catch-all for your home. From branches and leaves to birds’ nests and debris,  your gutters can easily pile up with all sorts of strange, and obstructive, materials. Before winter hits is one of the most important times to take a look at your gutters and give them a proper cleaning so that all the fall leaves, twigs, and other nature knick knacks don’t block ice or snow from melting and draining away from your roof. ‘

It’s also a good idea to take a peek throughout summertime, since tiny critters are highly active and can be using your gutters as storage facilities.

2: Severe Damage Can Be Done

A gutter may not seem like a powerful protector of houses, but it is. When it’s not functioning properly, gutters filter water away from your home so there is no chance of moisture forming in places it shouldn’t, or leaks developing. If your gutters are obstructed, water will begin to pile up, and with nowhere to go, it will sepp back into your house’s foundation, where it can cause deterioration, mold, and erosion.

If you have a weak foundation or a very bad gutter back up, water can actually seep from your foundation into your crawl space and basement, which is a serious problem in itself, and can lead to even more issues internally and externally. This type of leaking can hold a heavy price tag—think upwards of $10,000 in many cases.

Beyond foundational damage, if clogged gutters aren’t dealt with and water continues to rise, it can put strain on your roof and the boards behind the gutter that attach it to your home. This strain can eventually give way, which can cause your gutters to collapse and break off your home, which can cause more damage to the shingles on your roof and the exterior of your home. So it’s direly important to not ignore your gutters and keep them clean and ready to flow.

3: Ignoring Them Can Render Them Ineffective

Clearly, gutters are a major factor in roof and home protection. But what happens to them when you don’t take good care of these hardworking systems? When you refrain from cleaning out your gutters, the weight of debris can begin to cause sagging, which can eventually rip your gutters right off your roof—even more damage to attend to.

Dirty gutters can also be a breeding ground for moisture, rotting materials, and mold and plant growth, which are harmful to your home and will almost completely block your gutters.

Additionally, if you have stagnant water just sitting in your gutters, they can begin to rust and also smell. On a hot summer day, the last thing you want is a stinky, stuffed up gutter.
