How to Avoid Roofing Scams this Spring

April showers bring more than just May flowers. Along with the buds and blooms come storm chasers looking to make an easy buck off unwitting victims. And no, we don’t mean the kind who dangerously track tornadoes on the Weather Channel.

These are the people who show up on your doorstep after a major Indiana storm offering to perform your roof repairs at a discounted price. Once you give them a check, they perform shoddy work, or no work at all, then flee, leaving no options for recourse.

Learn how to spot the scams and hire a trusty roofer instead.

How to Spot a Storm Chaser

Ask to see proof of insurance, and check the company’s license status. If they don’t hold the proper insurance or licensing to operate in your area, send them away.

It’s best to hire  a company with a local presence and local connections. If they give you an address, drive by to make sure it’s legit. If they only provide a P.O. Box, consider this another red flag.

Don’t let anyone pressure you into hiring them on the spot. If someone knocks on your door with a low price, then it’s most likely too good to be true.

How to Hire a Reliable Roofer

After checking for a local office, insurance and licensing, take these additional steps to ensure you’re hiring a trusty roofer.

  • Ask your roofer if their work includes a warranty, and make sure the agreed-upon warranty is in your contract. Work that comes with no guarantee or warranty leaves you out of options if anything goes wrong.
  • Ask your contractor for references. Follow up with these references to make sure the work the company performed has held up. If they are nearby, drive by the house to take a peek at the roof.
  • Request a written estimate. This estimate should be detailed and include cost, a start and finish date and the payment policies. Thoroughly read this estimate and ask questions about anything you don’t understand before signing on the dotted line.

Storm season is well underway in the Indianapolis area, so be on the lookout for shady storm-chasing roofing contractors. It’s also a good time to consider a roof inspection to be sure your roof will weather the spring and summer storms.
